How to Prepare Your Quilt

Here is a list of things you can do for a nicer finished product:

1.     Press seams flat. *
2.     Remove all stray threads.*
(Yes, they do show through the front!)
3.     Make sure the backing is all squared up. *
4.     Save trimming your borders (especially curved ones) for
        after the quilting process.
It's easier to load a straight edge.
5.     Remove all interior selvages, including those on the backing.

(Selvages on the outside don't matter since they will be
        removed prior to binding.)
6.     Make sure the backing and batting are 4" larger all the way around.
7.     Backing seams should run side to side, if possible.

(Vertical seams create an uneven pull.)
8.     Pre-wash the backing if you pre-washed the quilt top fabrics.
9.     Batiks should be pre-washed 2-3 times prior to quilting.

(The weave is very dense and can cause thread breakage during
the quilting process. However, the wide backing batiks are
manufactured with a looser weave so the pre-wash on these
        isn't necessary for quilting purposes.)
10.   All 3 layers need to be separate at delivery.

* Additional charges may apply if I have to do any of #1-3 above.

LONGARM LEGACIES TEXTILE CLASSES

Look over my classes and see if there is something you’d like to try! Contact me with your preference.  I’ll make your studio appointment and we’ll have some fun! Feel free to get some friends together. No rigid schedule. Just whatever fits your needs. It couldn’t be simpler!

1.  Stash Buster Wreath

This is a great way to use up those odd shaped, dated or ugly fabric scraps that are lying around. Bring enough coordinating fabrics to fill a plastic grocery bag. I said it was a stash buster, didn’t I?!  Each scrap should be at least 3” x 7” and the finished wreath will be approximately 14” in diameter.

I provide wire wreath and wire.

Student provides fabric scraps, rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat.

 $10                                         Maximum 8 students                                    2 hour class

2.
Weaving and Collage

You must be an “outside the box” thinker on this one…or at least be willing to try!  Make a small, unique wall hanging collage that uses the weaving technique for the background. This is a fun and creative project for anyone!

I provide batting.

Student provides 1 yard piece of muslin, ½  yard double backed fusible web, some fabric with large motifs that are pleasing to you, scissors and a minimum of two ½ yard tone on tone fabrics along with sewing machine and supplies, matching threads.

$10                                          Maximum 6 students                                    2 hour class

3.  Paintsticks

Learn how to use paintsticks. These oil based “crayons” come in a variety of colors and can be used in so many ways!  Japanese Notan will be discussed. Your unique, finished “art cloth” piece will be permanent. How you use it is up to you!

I provide paintsticks, brushes, stencils, stamps and cleaner.

You provide 1 yard of pre-washed tone on tone fabric(s).

$20                                          Maximum 6 students                                    2 hour class

 4.  Decoupage Diva

Be a liberated piecer! Make a wall hanging with no sewing!  This is a fun technique that will take you back to your kindergarten days. Each piece will be an original.

I provide batting.

You provide two ½ yard pieces of coordinating fabric, or random fabric scraps, along with a 1 yard piece of muslin backing, scissors, rotary cutter and mat, school size bottle of Elmer’s white glue, narrow and wide foam brushes. Also bring a plastic wrapped piece of board or foam core that your backing piece will fit on.

$10                                          Maximum 4 students                                    2 hour class

5.  Flour Paste Resist

Make a beautiful “art cloth” using this simple technique.

I provide flour paste, T-pins, staple gun and textile paint.

You provide two 12” squares of prewashed white, cream or tone on tone light fabric, a hand held hair dryer, a wide bristle brush, supplies for a printing board*, a mixing bowl, large spoon, wire whisk and wooden skewer.  Also bring a brown bag lunch. Drying time is needed for this project.

$15                                          Maximum 4 students                                    3 hour class

* We will construct this in class. To make a printing board you will need a 2’ x 3’ piece of plywood, two 2 ½’ x 3 ½’ pieces of white craft felt, one 2 ½’ x  3 ½’ piece each of plastic and old sheet.  (When using your board, the plastic will keep your craft felt clean and the sheet will absorb extra ink.)

6.  Double Diamond Technique

Learn a technique that will impress everyone! Your finished piece will be unique to you depending on what you bring. It may be a table runner, a wall hanging or a piece of textile art!

I provide batting and glue sticks.

You provide the orphan blocks, three ½ yd. pieces of corresponding (to your orphan blocks) color fabrics, backing fabric, rotary cutter and mat, scissors, sewing machine and supplies, double backed lightweight fusible web, small iron and ironing board and the Double Diamond ruler. (The website to purchase your own ruler is www.Bright-Quilting-Notions.com)
